Jesus tells us that those who exalt themselves will be humbled and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
He uses the scribes and Pharisees as examples. They preach, Jesus says, but do not practice. They like to be served, but fail to serve others. They place burdens on others, but give no help to the burdened.
People who exalt themselves live above the people, rather than with them. But people who humble themselves live among the people they serve.
People who exalt themselves put themselves in the center of attention and want others to bow down to them — they live thinking that they are even above God. People who humble themselves put God at the center and do everything for him. They bow to God and to nothing else.
Perhaps this is a good examination of conscience. What (or who) is at the center of my life?
