Saturday of the Third Week of Lent – March 9, 2024

A surgeon both cuts and heals.

God is like that too. He says, “I slew them by the words of my mouth.” In fact, if we take the words of Sacred Scripture to heart, we are wounded by the truth about ourselves. We are sinners.

But God also heals us after he has cut us to the heart. His forgiving love is like the salve that comforts us in our affliction.

But, before we can seek God’s healing, we must first know that we are wounded people. A person who is seriously ill must agree to go to the emergency department before he or she receives proper treatment.

The tax collector in the Gospel went to the divine surgeon, felt the pain of his sin, and was healed by God’s mercy. The Pharisee would never admit that he was sick with sin. He would, therefore, never ask the Word of God to make the first incision so that he could begin to heal.

May we allow God to work on every area that needs to be cut out in us so that we can become whole again. Is it painful? Usually. Is it helpful? Always.
