“Seventy-five years is a long time,” Bishop Edward Malesic told the St. Mary of the Falls School community. He visited the campus on Oct. 2 to celebrate a Mass recognizing the school’s 75th anniversary.

The bishop reminded students and others gathered for the liturgy that Jesus is the most important part of their school. “It’s what sets you apart,” he said, noting other schools may teach the same type of classes, but they don’t focus on Jesus.

“In 1949, the parishioners here wanted to give the young people of the parish the best education they could, so they started this school. And today, St. Mary of the Falls School is continuing its mission of educating young minds and forming souls.”

When they attend Mass, Bishop Malesic told the students Jesus, who is in heaven, comes to them through the bread and wine that is consecrated and becomes his body and blood.

“Open your heart and let him in,” he said.

The goal is for everyone to become saints in heaven, the bishop explained. They have help from Jesus and their guardian angel, he said, noting it was the feast of the guardian angels, and that each of us has a guardian angel assigned at birth.

“Your angel watches over you and prays to God for you,” the bishop said. “Your angel has your back. Your angel has one eye on God and one eye on you. Your angel knows everything about you and wants the best for you. Your angel wants you to be saints, too, and will help you to practice on earth.”

Some ways to do this are by paying attention to what Jesus says at Mass, being kind to their classmates, praying for those in need, obeying their parents, listening to their teachers, reading their Bibles, “and don’t be a bully,” Bishop Malesic said.

He also shared the story of Blessed Carlo Acutis, an Italian youth who died in 2006 of leukemia at age 15. He is on the path to sainthood.

The bishop talked about how Carlo displayed a deep devotion to the Eucharist even as a young boy. He was gifted and loved computers, technology and gaming. But he recognized that they could be used for both good and bad purposes.

Carlo opted to focus on something good: the Eucharist. He created a website devoted to Eucharistic miracles, which is the foundation for exhibits around the world, including one that is traveling to parishes throughout the Diocese of Cleveland.

“Carlo said we are all unique,” the bishop said, repeating one of the young man’s quotes: “All people are born as originals, but many die as photocopies.”

The bishop encouraged the students to be like Carlo, to care more about what they look like on the inside than on outward appearances. “You are unique. Be yourself. Each of you brings something special to the world,” he added.

In addition, he reminded the students that “Mass opens a highway to heaven” for them.

After Mass, the bishop, Father Ryan Cubera, St. Mary of the Falls Parish pastor, and Annemarie Rajnicek, school principal, greeted students as they left Mass. The bishop also had an opportunity to chat with student council members and to visit a few classrooms.
