Today, Jesus says, “Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.”
In other words, we should work on our own sinfulness before we are quick to work on someone else’s. We should clean our own house before we begin to clean someone else’s.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Jesus didn’t say that we shouldn’t call out the faults of others. We must. Where there is evil, it must be confronted. But we should do it out of a sense of humility and not out of sense of pride. We should realize that we are all sinners. We all have weaknesses. When we realize this we are less likely to judge and condemn someone else.
And when we do speak to correct someone else, what we say must come from good hearts, not from evil ones. Or, as Jesus puts it, “From the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.” So, let’s have hearts that are full of love and empty of hate.
Have a blessed week and a great beginning of the Lenten Season this coming Ash Wednesday.
Let’s also continue to pray for our Holy Father Pope Francis during this time of sickness.
