Diocesan Pastoral Plan for Hispanic Ministry

It is our hope that this Diocesan Pastoral Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry will be a resource to our local faith communities as we strive to be a Church that “goes forth” as “a community of missionary disciples who take the first step, who are involved and supportive, who bear fruit and rejoice.” (EG, 24)

In 2015, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops invited all U.S. Catholics to embark on a four-year journey towards the Fifth National Encuentro for Hispanic/Latino Ministry. The main goal of the Fifth Encuentro is to discern ways in which the Church in the United States can better respond to the Hispanic/Latino presence, and to strengthen the ways in which Hispanics/Latinos respond to the call to the New Evangelization as missionary disciples serving the entire Church.

The Fifth Encuentro began at the grassroots level with a 5-part process of reflection and consultation in small communities and led to a Parish Encuentro. The Parish Encuentro was followed by diocesan, regional and national gatherings of delegates who represented the needs of the local community and identified recommendations to address the pastoral challenges at each level.

The following conclusions and diocesan priorities are the result of this grassroots consultation process and will guide our efforts in Hispanic Ministry over the next 3-5 years.

Area 1: Youth & Young Adults

  • Deepen the relationship of Hispanic Catholic youth and young adults with God and foster their greater engagement in the life of the Church.
  • Foster vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life, as well as support the sense of vocation in married and single life among Hispanic young people.

Area 2: Adult Faith Formation

  • Deepen the relationship of Hispanic Catholic adults to God and the life of the Church through effective faith formation.
  • Nurture Hispanic family life and strengthen marriages based on Christian virtues and Gospel values.

Area 3: Social Justice & Diversity

  • Promote immigration reform and the rights of undocumented immigrants.
  • Develop workshops and trainings and conferences that provide formation in the communities and serve to unite Catholics of diverse ethnicities, cultures and experiences.

Area 4: Evangelization

  • Educate, strengthen, and provide resources to parishes and apostolic movements on the New Evangelization.
  • Increase outreach to the marginalized such as inactive Catholics, LGBTQ community and their families, the sick, homebound and incarcerated.
