The Diocese of Cleveland’s Keeping the Faith strategic plan for Catholic elementary education calls for strengthening academic excellence through a number of strategies, including the sharing of academic performance information with increased transparency.
This report provides student proficiency information by subject and grade level for the 2023-24 school year for all elementary subjects required to be tested by the state of Ohio. These results reflect the percentage of all Catholic elementary school students who met the state’s benchmarks for proficiency on the NWEA Map Growth assessments, which are administered multiple times per year in Catholic elementary schools. These scores for all of the diocese’s Catholic elementary students are compared by subject and grade to those of all public school students, as reported on Ohio’s state report cards, as well as to the Catholic schools’ own performance the previous year.
Below are the rates of proficiency for all students in grades 3 through 8 English Language Arts and Mathematics as well as grades 5 and 8 Science.
In 2023-24, Catholic elementary schools educated just slightly more students than the year prior (23,495), with a mostly similar demographic profile, and produced similar academic results.
Beyond this summary information, parents and guardians of Catholic school students regularly receive individualized reports after each administration of the NWEA MAP Growth assessments. Each report displays a student's achievement and growth percentile from his/her most recent MAP Growth assessment, the national average achievement, as well the student’s historic achievement and projected proficiencies in relation to Ohio state tests, the ACT, and SAT. Resources on the NWEA website provide more information on interpreting these reports.
For Catholic school students, English Language Arts proficiency is calculated using NWEA MAP Growth Reading assessment, and Mathematics is calculated using the NWEA MAP Growth Mathematics assessment or the equivalent score on the Algebra I or Geometry assessments.
Ohio’s proficiency benchmarks by subject and grade level are indicated in the Ohio Linking Study.
