Special Education FAQ's

How can I learn what types of special education accommodations and services are available for my child?

  • A student's special education documents, Individualized  Education Program and Evaluation Team Report, list the special education services needed.  Because specific services can vary from school to school, you're encouraged to contact the specific Catholic school where you're interested in enrolling your child to learn about the services and accommodations they can provide.

What does my child need in order to be considered for a special education program?

  • Students in special education programs have an official diagnosis that qualifies them for special education services.  An IEP is necessary for students to receive the Autism or Jon Peterson Scholarship.

Which State Scholarship is right for my child?  EdChoice? Jon Peterson?  Autism?

  • Ohio students may only apply for and receive one State Scholarship at a time.  It's generally agreed upon that students seeking special education service should choose the scholarship that will provide for their unique educational needs, most commonly being the Jon Peterson and Autism Scholarships.  To be certain, contact the school your child is interested in attending for specific guidance.

How do I apply for the Jon Peterson or Autism Scholarship?

  • Contact the school your child is interested in attending for specific instructions.  Students must be accepted and enrolled in their school of choice first before they're able to complete a Jon Peterson or Autism Scholarship application.

Who do I contact to learn more about special education resources at a specific Catholic school?

  • Call the school of your choice.  Ask to speak with the principal or admissions coordinator regarding questions about special education services.

Can my child attend a Catholic school if he/she isn't Catholic?

  • Absolutely! While approximately 65% of our students are practicing Catholics, students from all faith traditions are welcome to attend a Catholic school.
