In this edition of Spotlight on Schools we highlight the work of students at Holy Name High School and Saint Joseph parish school in Avon Lake.
Holy Name students celebrate their "movie-making" success with the student produced film, "The Game That Was Never Won." The documentary highlights the excitement when the 2019-20 boys varsity basketball team won the district championship game but was unable to play in the regional semifinal tournament after it was canceled due to the pandemic shutdown. The Cleveland International Film Festival included the film in a special streaming category and it was also shown at a film festival in Los Angeles.
Students at St. Joseph Parish school in Avon Lake received lessons in gardening and serving the community by planting beets as part of the school's new learning garden. The school started the garden with a grant from teh Ohio Catholic Federal Credit Union. Produce from the garden went to ministries, Lorain County hunger centers and food pantries.
Magnificat students buzz into action on campus in effort to protect bees as they recognize the important role that they play in the environment. The Bee Committee, which is a part of the Seeds of Service Club, spent eight weeks learning about bees and how to care for them as they got a beehive up and running on school grounds. The hive began with 12,00 bees and now houses about 75,000. The students completed their first honey extraction at the start of teh school year.
