Position Summary:
The Choreographer is responsible for designing and teaching movement that enhances the storytelling and overall quality of the summer theatrical production. This role provides leadership in developing engaging, appropriate, and accessible choreography for all participants, including students, alumni, faculty, staff, and volunteers. The Choreographer supports a safe, respectful, and mission-aligned environment while promoting confidence, creativity, and proper technique.
Major Responsibilities:
- Create and teach choreography for all musical numbers, ensuring movement supports storytelling and character development
- Adapt choreography to accommodate varying skill levels, ages, and experience among participants
- Ensure all movement aligns with the tone, appropriateness, and values of the production and school community
- Plan and lead dance rehearsals, including structured instruction and progression of choreography
- Lead and model proper warm-up and stretching routines to prepare participants physically for rehearsal
- Instruct participants in proper technique to promote safety and prevent injury
- Provide individualized and group feedback to improve performance quality and confidence
- Collaborate with the Director and Music Director to ensure alignment across staging, music, and movement
- Reinforce expectations for participation, including focus, effort, and professionalism
- Assist with staging transitions and integration of choreography into the overall production
- Support rehearsals and performances, including backstage coordination as needed
- Assist with production responsibilities, including preparation and strike
Qualifications:
- Virtus trained (or willingness to complete prior to rehearsals)
- Background in dance and choreography across a variety of styles
- Experience teaching or working with mixed-age and mixed-ability groups
- Ability to modify and scaffold choreography to meet diverse participant needs
- Strong communication and instructional skills
- Demonstrated leadership and ability to foster confidence in performers
- Ability to collaborate effectively with the Director and production team
- Commitment to the mission, teachings, and traditions of the Catholic Church and to Catholic education
- Ability to pass FBI/BCI background check
