The Church celebrates a couple’s love at one of the most memorable, pivotal, and beautiful times in a couple’s life. It is essential to remember that it is not just about love for its own sake– it is about the couple’s love for one another, which honors and reflects the love that God has for each of us.

Marriage preparation begins remotely at birth as a child watches and learns from their parents. Young people are encouraged to learn the skills of discernment or deciding if marriage is their vocation. Engaged couples are asked to reach out to their parish as soon as possible to begin preparation for the sacrament. Typically, the immediete preparation for the sacrament of marriage is done at the direction of the clergy preparing a couple. We strongly encourage finding a marriage mentoring couple to help as a support through the first few critical years of marriage.

Marriage and Family Ministry offers training for clergy and couples who help prepare couples for the Sacrament of Marriage as well as formation after receiving the sacrament.
Pre-Cana is the name given to the marriage preparation retreat required for all marrying couples in the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland. Most Pre-Cana Days happen between February and early May, although parishes and retreat centers may schedule them any time during the year.
Has one or both individuals seeking marriage been married prior? Do one or both individuals have a stepchild(ren) who is a minor? Then Cana II is the advance program to participate in.
The jubilee anniversary Mass for couples married 50 years takes place each year at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Cleveland.
