Marty Glickman and Lessons from the 1936 Olympics and Beyond
The 1936 Olympics, better known as the "Hitler Olympics" was held in Berlin and many recall the great Jesse Owens putting to rest Hitler's thoughts on how other races of people were inferior by winning four gold medals.
Lesser known, is the story surrounding two members of the highly favored 4 man relay squad: Marty Glickman and Sam Stoller, who were snubbed by Nazi sympathizers so as to not embarrass Hitler further. Owens took Glickman's place on the team and they went on to win the gold, but Glickman and Stoller never got a chance to run in the Olympics again with the outbreak of World War II cancelling future Olympic games.
Join our keynote speaker, Dr. Jeffrey Gurock, author of Marty Glickman: The Life of an American Jewish Sports Legend and professor from Yeshiva University in New York to hear more about Glickman's life as a NYC area sportscaster, who ended up teaching other sportscasters at Fordham, a Catholic school, and became a constant voice against antisemitism.
Our Catholic respondent to Dr Gurock will be Deacon Mike Hayes, a former sportscaster and producer and protegee of Glickman's.
Refreshments to follow. The lecture is free, but you must register here
