The Holy See has notified the Diocese of Cleveland that the requests of Gary D. Berthiaume and J. Brendan McNulty to be removed from the clerical state were granted.
In response to credible accusations of sexual misconduct involving minors, Gary D. Berthiaume was removed from active ministry in 2002. Subsequently, he sought removal from the clerical state. Removal from the clerical state means that in accord with canon law Gary D. Berthiaume is no longer incardinated in the Diocese of Cleveland, and he is unable to function in any capacity as a priest anywhere, with the exception of offering absolution to the dying.

The Diocese of Cleveland continues its commitment to protecting children and helping to heal victims of abuse. We are deeply sorry for the pain suffered by survivors of abuse due to action of some members of the clergy, as nothing is more important than protecting children.
