On August 28, 2011 Pope Benedict said in an address, "By willingly accepting the cross, Jesus carries the cross of all men and becomes the source of salvation for the whole of humanity." Our Holy Father reminded us, not only about God's great love for all people, but also our duty to participate, as baptized Catholics, in the lives of all of humanity. Jesus often spoke in terms of all humanity, such as in his prayer "that all of them may be one." (John 17:21) The concept of all or all people is foundational for our understanding of human dignity and the importance of each and every life created in God's image.
