Nearly a thousand attended special 4th of July Mass
Bishop Richard Lennon of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cleveland joined by two Eastern Rite Bishops, the Most Reverend John Kudrick of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Parma and the Most Reverend John Burra of the Ukrainian Catholic Diocese of Parma celebrated Mass in Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist as the culmination of the U.S. Bishops? ?Fortnight for Freedom.?
The 2-week period was devoted to prayer and action opposing the federal healthcare law recently upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court. The provision of the law in question requires religious institutions to pay for healthcare coverage contrary to their faith beliefs such as abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization and contraception.
Here is a portion of Bishop Lennon?s message:
In wake of the Supreme Court decision, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has not joined efforts to repeal the law in its entirety, and do not do so today. They continue to urge Congress to pass and the Administration to sign legislation to fix those flaws.
