Lake Catholic High School has announced the inaugural launch of a fully-functioning, student-run credit union branch to be located on its Mentor campus. Designed and operated in partnership with Cardinal Community Credit Union, the initiative is the first of its kind in Northeast Ohio.
The branch will serve as the centerpiece of a disciplined, integrated financial literacy education program, focusing on promoting positive money management skills such as thrift, smart spending, informed use of credit, and the benefits of regular saving and investing.
Officially cobranded as the SmartStart Cougar Branch, the operation will be staffed by Lake Catholic student volunteers under the supervision of Cardinal. The project is the collaborative brainchild of Cardinal CEO, Christine Blake, and Lake Catholic President, Sal Miroglotta. "The timing could not be better," asserts Miroglotta. "The state is putting greater emphasis on financial literacy education, and we're setting the foundation for a substantive program." According to Miroglotta, high school students who are exposed to cumulative financial education show an increase in financial knowledge, which in turn drives increasingly responsible financial behavior as they become young adults.
