A "Pilgrimage for Immigration Reform" to be held in Painesville - September 5

News of the Diocese

August 29, 2013

The Diocese of Cleveland through its Catholic Commission of Lake & Geauga counties will hold a "Pilgrimage for Immigration Reform" at Saint Mary Parish, Painesville on Thursday, September 5 beginning at 5 p.m.

Hundreds of parishioners from across the Cleveland diocese will gather at Saint Mary Parish, 242 N. State Street in Painesville, Ohio for the "Pilgrimage for Immigration Reform."

Participants will meet at Saint Mary Parish for an opening prayer and then process through town. The route will be approximately 2.5 miles with stops for reflection marking each of the five principles that the U.S. Catholic Bishops would like included in immigration reform. There will be a witness and prayer at each stop before the procession returns to Saint Mary?s for a concluding prayer service.

About the U.S. Catholic Bishops? Position on Immigration Reform

The bishops offer a comprehensive set of recommendations for changing U.S. laws and policies to reflect the principles contained in Scripture and Catholic Social Teaching and to bring about a more humane and just immigration system in the United States. The bishops? call for reforms includes the following elements:

- Provide a path to citizenship for undocumented persons in the country;

- Preserve family unity as a corner-stone of our national immigration system;

- Provide legal paths for low-skilled immigrant workers to come and work in the United States;

- Restore due process protections to our immigration enforcement policies;

- Address the root causes of migration, such as persecution and economic disparity.
