The Reverend James F. Flood, Senior Priest-Retired, died Saturday, 28 September 2013, after having received the prayerful support and consolation of the Sacraments.


James F. Flood was born on 1 September 1935. His parents were the late John and Mary (Reynolds). He was educated at St. Jerome, Cleveland, Benedictine High School, St. Gregory Seminary, Cincinnati and St. Mary Seminary, Cleveland. On 19 May 1962 in the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, Archbishop John F. Whealon ordained him to the priesthood for the service of the Diocese of Cleveland.

 

Fr. Flood?s first assignment was as Parochial Vicar of St. James, Lakewood. During this assignment he was appointed Chaplain of Knights of Columbus Lakewood Council #2643. On 16 October 1968 he was transferred to St. Rose of Lima, Cleveland to serve as Parochial Vicar. He was transferred to St. Ann, Cleveland Heights to serve as Parochial Vicar on 5 July 1973. During this assignment he was appointed chairman of the advisory committee for the Suburban Cuyahoga E. Deanery. On 29 June 1978 Fr. Flood was appointed Parochial Vicar of St. Vincent de Paul, Cleveland. He was assigned as Parochial Vicar of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Wickliffe on 30 June 1983. During this assignment he was appointed Chaplain of Knights of Columbus Wickliffe Council #5405. Fr. Flood was transferred to St. Vincent, Akron as Parochial Vicar effective 16 June 1988. On 3 December 1993 he was appointed Administrator pro tem of St. Vincent, Akron. On 21 June 1994 Fr. Flood was appointed Parochial Vicar of Holy Family, Stow. Fr. Flood was transferred on 1 September 1999 to serve as Chaplain of the Village at St. Edward Nursing Care and Assisted Living in Fairlawn where he remained until his retirement on 1 January 2013.

 

Vespers will be celebrated by Bishop Richard Lennon on Sunday, 6 October in St. Vincent de Paul Church, 164 West Market Street, Akron at 3:00 p.m. The wake will continue until 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, 7 October in St. Vincent de Paul Church at 11:00 a.m. Bishop A. Edward Pevec will be the main celebrant and Fr. Joseph Kraker will be the homilist. Interment is at Holy Cross Cemetery, Akron.

 

In accord with the provisions of the Marian Pact, please try to attend and concelebrate the Funeral Liturgy, offer Mass for him as you are able and cause him to be remembered and prayed for in the appropriate public prayers of the Church. May Fr. Flood and all our priests, deacons and bishops who have died, live forever in the joy of the Resurrection.
