Dorothy Kazel and Jean Donovan remembered at the site of El Salvador's Chapel of Martyrs
The Sisters Chapel on the site of the December, 1980 martyrdom in El Salvador which included four women, two from the Cleveland Diocese, will be the focus of a special pilgrimage on Saturday, October 19th. Lead by Fr. Santos Martinez-Martinez, the people of Saint Therese of Avila Parish nearest the memorial grounds will pilgrimage from their fiesta in the town to the Sisters' chapel.
In remarks, Fr. Santos said, "Sister Dorothy Kazel and lay worker Jean Donovan were much like Jesus. Jesus worked with outcasts during his time, the Clevelanders were called communists and subversives for their work with the people. The pilgrimage is one of the parish's "Year of Faith" activities.
The memorial site is now protected by the El Salvador government, and is now considered national patrimony because of the three sisters and lay worker who died there. The memorial chapel is now used for liturgies and retreats, among other activities.
