The 100th anniversary of the Catholic Church?s statement on migration and refugees was marked by a special Mass celebrated by Cleveland Bishop Richard Lennon who was assisted by Romanian Catholic Bishop John Botean and Cleveland Auxiliary Bishop Roger Gries on Sunday morning, January 19th.
Several hundred people, many from nationalities spanning the globe celebrated the ?International Day for Immigrants, Migrants and Refugees? at St. Colman Church where a colorful Mass featuring nationality music and readings was followed by a reception and potluck lunch.
In his homily, Bishop Lennon told the many Hispanic, African, Asian, and Eastern Europeans that the Church sends the ?messages of hope to all people?. Just as the Lord called Abraham to travel to a new land, the Church has recognized the responsibility of all people to live out their destinies.
Echoing Pope Francis?s message for this day, ?Toward a better world,? the Bishop says there is the need to support all people, give them respect and dignity, and eradicate the violence so people can live safely. He added, that migrants and refugees are of great concern to the Church as the Faith community needs to continue to assist with support and conviction.
The Mass was followed by a reception with people in their native garb, music from around the globe, and foods from every nationality.
