Pontiff and U.S. Head of State Speak Privately for Over 50 Minutes

This was the first meeting between Pope Francis and the President of the United States.
After the initial greeting, the Pope led President Obama to his desk where they spoke in private for just over 50 minutes. According to journalists present, the Holy Father spoke to president in Spanish, and was accompanied by a member of the Secretariat of State, Msgr. Mark Miles.
A communique released by the Holy See Press Office stated that the Holy Father and President Obama exchanged views on "international themes", in particular areas of conflict. They both expressed their hope that "there would be respect for humanitarian and international law and a negotiated solution between the parties involved."
