Bishop Richard Lennon spent the past weekend in the Central American country of El Salvador where the Diocese of Cleveland has operated a series of missions for the past 50 years.
An open-air Mass of Thanksgiving in the city of La Libertad included Archbishop Escobar of the Archdiocese of San Salvador and the current Cleveland mission team.

The Cleveland mission began in El Salvador in 1964 after an appeal from Pope St. John XXIII that North American dioceses support their Latin American brothers and sisters because of a drastic shortage of clergy to serve a huge Catholic population.
The Cleveland mission has sustained its support for 50 years despite a 12 year civil war in which two of our missionaries, Ursuline Sister Dorothy Kazel and lay volunteer Jean Donovan were murdered in 1980.
