Archbishop Oscar Romero was a martyr, declare Vatican theologians
Ruling paves way for archbishop - shot dead while celebrating Mass in 1980 - to be made a saint
Archbishop Oscar Romero was murdered "in hatred of the faith", a panel of theologians at the Congregation for the Causes of Saints has ruled.
The decision, reported by the Italian bishop's newspaper Avvenire, is a huge step on the Salvadoran archbishop's path to canonization, a process that began at the diocesan stage in 1994, 14 years after his murder on March 24, 1980.
