The Reverend John J. Weigand, Senior Priest-Retired, died Tuesday, 27 January 2015, after having received the prayerful support and consolation of the Sacraments.

John J. Weigand was born on 2 February 1940. His parents were the late Edward C. and Margaret (Sass). He was educated at St. Augustine Elementary School, Barberton, Borromeo High School, Wickliffe, Borromeo Seminary College, Wickliffe and St. Mary Seminary, Cleveland. On 20 May 1967 in the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, Bishop Clarence G. Issenmann ordained him to the priesthood for the service of the Diocese of Cleveland.

Fr. Weigand?s first assignment was as Parochial Vicar of St. Mel, Cleveland. During this assignment he served on the Diocesan Commission on Sacred Liturgy as representative of Northwest Deanery effective 25 November 1968. He also served as Chairman of the Advisory Committee for Cuyahoga Northwest Deanery effective 8 January 1969. On 5 July 1973 he was appointed Parochial Vicar of St. Bridget of Kildare, Parma. Fr. Weigand also served as Director of the Cleveland Center of the Cursillo Movement in the Diocese of Cleveland effective 20 September 1974. Fr. Weigand was appointed Parochial Vicar of St. Michael, Independence on 10 February 1977. On 30 June 1983 he was appointed Parochial Vicar of St. Vincent de Paul, Cleveland. On 20 August 1985 Fr. Weigand was named Pastor of St. James, Lakewood. In addition to this assignment Fr. Weigand was appointed Diocesan Spiritual Director of the Cirsillo Movement effective 23 April 1986 until 3 December 1991. He retired on 27 June 2010.

Vespers will be celebrated by Bishop Anthony Pilla on Friday, 30 January in Guardian Angels Church, 1686 Cleveland-Massillion Road, Copley, OH, 44321 at 3:00 p.m. The wake will continue until 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, 31 January in Guardian Angels Church at 11:00 a.m. Bishop Richard Lennon will be the main celebrant and Fr. James Kramer will be the homilist. Interment will be at Holy Cross, Akron.

In accord with the provisions of the Marian Pact, please try to attend and concelebrate the Funeral Liturgy, offer Mass for him as you are able and cause him to be remembered and prayed for in the appropriate public prayers of the Church. May Fr. Weigand and all our bishops, priests and deacons who have died, live forever in the joy of the Resurrection.
