The Reverend John T. McDonough, Pastor Emeritus, Saint Sebastian Parish, Akron died Tuesday, 5 January 2016, after having received the prayerful support and consolation of the Sacraments.
John Thomas McDonough was born on 19 February 1925. His parents were the late John T. and Irene C. (Senn). He was educated at St. Joseph Seminary (Villa Angela), Holy Cross School, Euclid, Cathedral Latin High School, Cleveland, St. Charles College, Catonsville, MD and St. Mary Seminary, Cleveland. On 29 April 1950 in the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, Archbishop Edward F. Hoban ordained him to the priesthood for the service of the Diocese of Cleveland.
Fr. McDonough?s first assignment was as Parochial Vicar of Ascension, Cleveland. On 1 September 1955 he was transferred to St. Christopher, Cleveland to serve as Parochial Vicar. During this assignment he also served as Chaplain for the Cleveland College and Dyke Newman Club and for the Newman Club Alumni Association. Fr. McDonough was assigned Parochial Vicar of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist on 21 June 1960. In addition to this assignment he served the Newman Alumni Association as National Director. On 14 June 1962 he was transferred to serve at the University of Akron as Director and Resident Chaplain of Akron Newman Club. On 1 September 1965 Fr. McDonough was appointed Executive Director of the National Newman Apostolate, Washington, D.C. Fr. McDonough was appointed Assistant Director of the St. Joseph Christian Life Center on 28 August 1969. In addition to this assignment on 7 October 1969 he was appointed to serve as Director of the Diocesan Priests Personnel Board. On 1 July 1974 he was assigned Coordinator of the Pastoral Team at St. Mary Magdalene, Willowick. During this assignment he also served as Diocesan Consultor and Dean of Lake-Geauga (1979-1983), and the Tribunal as an Associate Judge and a Prosynodal Judge (1983). On 8 January 1985 Fr. McDonough was appointed Pastor of St. Sebastian, Akron. Fr. McDonough retired on 19 February 1995 and was named Pastor Emeritus. On 10 June 1996 he served as Administrator pro tem of Our Lady of Grace, Hinckley. On 1 June 2009 he was appointed as an elected representative of retired priests to the Presbyteral Council and concluded this appointment on 31 May 2012. He was well loved and enjoyed the friendship and support of many parishioners from his assignments particularly the kindness shown to him by the parishioners at Our Lady of Grace, Hinckley where he lived as a Senior-Retired priest.
The wake will begin with Vespers on Monday, 11 January in Our Lady of Grace Church, 1088 Ridge Road, Hinckley, OH 44233 at 3:00 p.m. Bishop Roger Gries with be the presider. The wake will continue until 8:00 p.m. His body will be transferred to St. Sebastian Church, 476 Mull Avenue, Akron, OH 44320 on Tuesday, 12 January. The wake will continue and visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Bishop Richard Lennon will be the main celebrant and Fr. James O?Donnell will be the homilist. Interment will be at All Souls Cemetery, Chardon.
In accord with the provisions of the Marian Pact, please try to attend and concelebrate the Funeral Liturgy, offer Mass for him as you are able and cause him to be remembered and prayed for in the appropriate public prayers of the Church. May Fr. McDonough and all our bishops, priests and deacons who have died, live forever in the joy of the Resurrection.
