A story of life: One woman's choice gave Marissa a 'Special Day' and her parents a daughter

News of the Diocese

January 13, 2016

Editor?s note: Marissa Healy shared this personal reflection on adoption.

She and her siblings, Michael and Megan Plaspohl, were adopted by Ed and Mary Ann Plaspohl as infants. They are not biological siblings; each was adopted from a different Ohio city.

Marissa and her husband, Rick Healy, are the parents of Grace, 3; Josuha, 19 months, and a new baby who arrived after deadline for this issue. They are members of St. Ambrose Parish in Brunswick.

Growing up, my parents referred to Oct. 15 as my ?Special Day.? It is not my birthday.

On that day 30 years ago, my Mom and Dad brought me home for the first time. Not from the hospital, but from a foster care home in Dayton, Ohio. I was 2 months old. My parents? greatest wish was to start a family of their own, and on Oct. 15, 1985, a dream came true for them and for me.

I am forever grateful that God saw fit to bring us, along with my adopted siblings, together as a family.

Somewhere out there is the woman who made that dream
