Beaumont alum Emily Infeld to race for gold in Rio Olympics

A watch party is planned for 9:30 a.m. Aug. 12 at Beaumont School to cheer on alumna Emily Infeld as she runs in the 10,000-meter event in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

Beaumont coach Jim Emery, who coached Emily in high school, will host the watch party in the school dining hall and will provide commentary throughout. Students, faculty, staff, parents and friends of the school are expected to attend. Beaumont is at 3301 North Park Blvd., Cleveland Heights.

Emily is a 2008 Beaumont graduate and a 2012 graduate of Georgetown University, where she established herself as among the country?s top collegiate distance runners.

She placed second in the 10,000-meter qualifying run on July 10 and earned a spot on the United States team in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. A well-known distance runner, she also won the bronze medal at the 2015 IAAF World Championships.

While at Georgetown, Emily was the 2012 NCAA indoor 3,000 meter champion. Her personal bests include 15:07.18 for 5,000 meters and 31:38.71 for 10,000 meters, both set early in the 2015 outdoor track season.

At Beaumont, Emily won four consecutive state titles in the 800-meter event.

Her older sister, Maggie, also a Beaumont and Georgetown graduate, was an acclaimed, world class runner.

Emily and Maggie are the daughters of University Heights Mayor Sue Infield.
