More than 90 golfers headed to Lakewood Country Club in Westlake on Aug. 22 for the Bishop?s 2016 Golf Classic. It was a picture-perfect day as golfers hit the links for the fundraiser.
The event generated more than $70,000 to help provide tuition assistance for students attending Catholic schools in the eight-county Diocese of Cleveland and will help defray costs of the new Northeast Ohio Catholic magazine, which is published six times per year and mailed free to 240,000 homes throughout the diocese.
Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Roger Gries was among the golfers; Bishop Richard Lennon joined the group later for dinner and some brief remarks.
Emcee for the dinner and awards presentation was Mike Hargrove, former Cleveland Indians manager, who entertained the golfers with anecdotes about his days as a professional baseball player and coach.
Christopher Knight, secretary for catechetical formation and education and superintendent of schools for the diocese, shared some remarks on Catholic education and introduced a brief video that featured students and Cleveland Central Catholic High School. Some student-athletes from Elyria Catholic High School were on hand to greet golfers as they returned from the course and to direct them to the dining room.
Proceeds from the outing will provide funds for students needing tuition assistance. Last year, 9,465 students applied for aid and more than $2 million was distributed to 3,185 elementary and high school students throughout the diocese.
Medical Mutual was presenting sponsor for the golf classic. Other key sponsors included Boyd Watterson Asset Management, Dollar Bank, Maloney + Novotny, LLC, Milano Monuments and Religious Gift Center, the Nock family, Onix Research and Oswald Companies.
The event was organized by the Catholic Community Foundation.
