More than 100 guests at the Bishop William M. Cosgrove Center near downtown Cleveland enjoyed a special lunch on Nov. 21, thanks to a World Series wager between Cleveland Bishop Richard Lennon and Cardinal Blase Cupich of the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Bishop Lennon bet that the Cleveland Indians would be victorious in the World Series, while Cardinal Cupich wagered on the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs prevailed, in Game 7 in extra innings and with a rain delay. The wagers involved providing food for a meal program serving the needy in each city.

Despite the outcome of the World Series, Bishop Lennon and Cardinal Cupich decided they each would honor their wagers.
The archdiocese arranged for Chicago deep dish pizza from Lou Malnati?s Pizzeria and homemade brownies from Misericordia Hearts and Flour Bakery to be delivered to Cleveland. It was served to about 100 lunch guests at the Bishop Cosgrove Center on Nov. 21. Bishop Lennon and Patrick Gareau, secretary for the Diocese of Cleveland Catholic Charities Corp., helped serve the food.
Bishop Lennon offered grace before lunch and told the lunch guests he was grateful for the generosity of the archdiocese. ?But we?ll prevail next year, when everyone comes back,? he said, adding, ?Go Tribe!?
A Cleveland-style meal, prepared by Italian Creations of Lakewood, will be delivered to Chicago to feed more than 100 people at an evening supper program for the homeless that is sponsored by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago. The menu will be kielbasa, sauerkraut, potato and cheese pierogis, mixed vegetable medley, salad and homemade sourdough bread.
The Bishop Cosgrove Center, at East 18th Street and Superior Avenue, provides guests with access to services including hot meals, shower facilities, mail distribution and other forms of assistance.
