The Center for Pastoral Leadership, or CPL, is one of the hidden treasures of the Diocese of Cleveland.
CPL, located at 28700 Euclid Ave., Wickliffe, is celebrating its 25th anniversary and will have a free open house for the community 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, April 30. Visitors will be guided on a tour of the seminary, library, classrooms, offices and chapel. The tour will end in the Founders Room, where light refreshments will be available and entities housed at CPL will have information tables.
Originally occupied from the mid-1940s as Marycrest Home for Girls, the building later became the home of Borromeo Seminary, which was a high school and college (or minor) seminary. Saint Mary Seminary, a post-college or major seminary, moved to the site in 1991. The 366,000-square-foot building sits on 43 acres.
Father Mark Latcovich, president-rector of Borromeo and Saint Mary seminaries, said Bishop Anthony Pilla had a vision for a collaborative center for ministry. In 1990, it was announced that Saint Mary Seminary would leave its longtime home on Ansel Road in Cleveland and move to the Wickliffe building with Borromeo, placing both the diocesan college and major seminaries under one roof. Saint Mary Seminary was founded by Bishop Amadeus Rappe, the first bishop of Cleveland, in 1848
