There will be some changes to the Mass and confession schedule at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist due to the Christmas holiday.
Since Christmas is a holy day of obligation and it falls on a Monday, it is a requirement to attend Mass for both Sunday, Dec. 24, the fourth Sunday of Advent, and Christmas. However, Jan. 1, 2018, the solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, is not a holy day of obligation.
Masses on Dec. 24 -- for the fourth Sunday of Advent -- will be at 8 and 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. There will be no 5:30 p.m. Mass that day.
The Christmas Vigil Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Nelson Perez at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 24. A choral concert at 9:15 p.m. Dec. 24 will precede the 10 p.m. Christmas Mass at night.
On Christmas Day, Dec. 25, Masses will be celebrated at 8 and 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. There will be no 5:30 p.m. Mass on Christmas. Bishop Perez will celebrate 10:30 a.m. Mass.
Saturday, Dec. 23, confessions will be heard before the 7:15 a.m., noon and 4:30 p.m. Masses, as well as 7:45-8:15 and 11:15-11:45 a.m. and 3-4 p.m.
Masses on Dec. 31, the Feast of the Holy Family, will follow the regular Sunday schedule: 8 and 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 and 5:30 p.m.
Masses on Jan. 1 will be celebrated at 9 and 11 a.m. There will be no confessions on Jan. 1.
The cathedral office will be closed from Dec. 22 through Jan. 2, 2018.
