The great Catholic theologian John Cardinal Newman once said, “Growth is the only evidence of life.” One major source of growth in life is that which is provided by our Catholic schools.
The Diocese of Cleveland is blessed with 91 elementary and 20 secondary schools which year after year follow their mission to form students and help them develop into responsible young people with sharp minds and caring hearts as witnesses to the Gospel.
As we celebrate Catholic Schools Week, we should take time to reflect on the important spiritual, academic and societal contributions that grow from a Catholic education. This year’s theme is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” It drives home the foundation for life that our Catholic schools provide.
Catholic schools offer an extraordinary education. They also invite students to encounter Christ and experience his power to transform hearts. And they help young people learn to love God by serving others.
I ask that you take time during this special week to participate in events being held at your local Catholic school, as well as to pray for and thank the clergy, religious sisters, administrators, teachers, staff, parents and all those who work so hard and sacrifice to continue the excellence, tradition and experience of Catholic education.
And please pray for our Catholic school students, that the Holy Spirit may strengthen them in their studies and that they may grow ever closer to Christ.
