Priests enjoy prayer, fellowship and lunch with bishop

News of the Diocese

April 22, 2018

Bishop Nelson Perez promised to get acquainted with the Diocese of Cleveland when he was installed as the 11th bishop last September. In the ensuing months, he has undertaken a hectic schedule of visits to parishes, schools and other organizations in order to be visible and to fulfill his promise. He also has met with interfaith leaders and civic officials.

Whenever possible, he enjoys visiting the seminary and spending time with those in formation for the priesthood.

?I love young people and I love being with them,? he said.

Recently ordained priests also have a place on the bishop?s radar. In fact, he?s invited several to private group lunches at his residence.

On April 20, he met with about a dozen priests who were ordained during the last five years for leisurely lunch. They had a chance to chat with him and share stories for a few minutes in the parlor at the rectory of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Conversation was candid and friendly as they got to know one another.

The group moved upstairs to the rectory chapel for exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, private prayer, midday prayer and grace before meals. Then it was downstairs to the dining room for lunch and more conversation.

They also took a few minutes to pose for a group photo.

Joining them was Father Dan Schlegel, the diocesan secretary and vicar for clergy and religious.

It was the second such lunch event Bishop Perez hosted. Earlier in the week, he traveled to the Center for Pastoral Leadership where he met with prospective seminarians and their pastors for a social, conversation and ice cream.
