Catholic Charities appeal responds to opioid crisis

News of the Diocese

May 9, 2018

The epidemic of addiction, especially the growing number of people addicted to opioids, continues to stretch resources both in the Diocese of Cleveland and beyond.

That?s why the follow-up in-pew parish appeal for Catholic Charities, May 19-20, is earmarked for expanding addiction treatment and prevention services across the eight-county diocese, Catholic Charities knows that recovery is possible.

During the appeal weekend donors can double their impact, thanks to a $100,000 matching grant. During the weekend of May 19-20, any new, increased or additional gift to Catholic Charities returned in the envelopes available at all Masses or donated online at CatholicCommunity.org/Challenge will be matched up to $100,000.

Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland has substance abuse programs for men and women, including Matt Talbot residential and intensive outpatient programs. This program is named after an Irishman who battled alcoholism from age 13 until he pledged abstinence from drinking for three months, then six months and then for the rest of his life.

Talbot, a devout Catholic, lived alone and never married. As his faith deepened, he lived a life of prayer, fasting and service. He died in 1925 at age 69 and was canonized in 1975. He is considered the patron saint for those struggling with alcoholism.
