Bishop Nelson Perez will be the main celebrant and Deacon Thomas Hupertz will be the homilist at the 9:30 a.m. Aug. 25 funeral Mass for Father Joseph A. Goebel at SS. Robert & William Church, 367 E. 260th St., Euclid.

Vespers will be at 3 p.m. Aug. 24 at SS. Robert & William Church, with Bishop Roger Gries, OSB as presider and homilist. The wake will continue until 7 p.m. Visitation also will be 8-9:15 a.m. Aug. 25, prior to the funeral Mass.

Father Goebel, 92, died on Aug. 21.

He was born Oct.7, 1925 to the late Joseph A. and Julia R. (Donovan). Father Goebel was educated at Sacred Heart Elementary, Staten Island, New York; St. Theresa Elementary, Coral Gables, Florida; St. Ignatius High School, Cleveland; Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit, Michigan; and Saint Mary Seminary, Cleveland. Archbishop Edward F. Hoban ordained him to the priesthood for service to the Diocese of Cleveland on April 29, 1950 in the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist.

Father Goebel’s first assignment was as parochial vicar of Holy Redeemer Parish, Cleveland. He was transferred on Dec. 13, 1951 to serve as parochial vicar of Epiphany Parish in Cleveland. Then on Jan. 7, 1954 he was transferred to St. Joseph Parish, Strongsville to serve as parochial vicar. Father Goebel was assigned parochial vicar of St. Ann Parish, Cleveland Heights on Nov. 28, 1958. In addition, he served as the bishop’s representative for the Welfare of Children with Special Needs, effective April 28, 1966. On June 15, 1967 he was assigned as parochial vicar of St. Augustine Parish, Cleveland and continued his work with people with special needs. On June 13, 1968 Father Goebel was appointed parochial vicar at the Conversion of St. Paul, Euclid and on June 17, 1970 he served as priest in residence at Rose-Mary Home.

He was named pastor of St. Louis Parish in Cleveland Heights on April 13, 1972. On March 20, 1974 he served as priest in residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and on Dec. 7, 1974 he was named pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Madison. Father Goebel was named associate director of St. Joseph Christian Life Center, Cleveland on June 10, 1979. On Oct. 16, 1980 he served St. Francis de Sales Parish in Akron as senior parochial vicar.

Father Goebel was named pastor of St. Bede the Venerable Parish, Mentor on Dec. 1, 1981 and on June 24, 1986 he was assigned to serve as chaplain of Euclid General Hospital (Meridia Euclid) with residency at St. Robert Bellarmine, Euclid.

Father Goebel retired on Nov. 1, 1996. After his retirement he continued to provide volunteer part-time ministry to Euclid General Hospital (1998).

He was a kind, generous and faithful priest who gave of himself for the good of others His infectious smile, warm welcome and great love of the priesthood was reflected in the manner in which he served so faithfully. He will be greatly missed.

Interment will be at All Souls Cemetery, Chardon.
