Seminarians from Borromeo and Saint Mary seminaries faced off in the first CPL Derby soccer match on Sept. 21 at the Center for Pastoral Leadership. The two seminaries battled on the soccer field for bragging rights, with the Borromeo Philosophers meeting the Saint Mary Theologians.
The Borromeo squad was led by senior captain Eddie Miller. Charlie Bulger gave the Philosophers some swagger by leading the team onto the field with his bagpipes.
The Saint Mary squad was led by captain Cameron Popik, second theology.
President-rector Father Mark Latcovich opened the event with a prayer.
The Theologians walked away victorious with a commanding 4-0 win over the Philosophers. After a scoreless first half, the Theologians picked up the pace. Goals were scored by Chris Stein, Joseph Truong Viet Ho, Jon Hawkins and an own goal by Giles Webinger.
?It was a fun match,? said Popik. ?Both sides played hard and we enjoy competing against each other, pushing each other to be better and work together.?
Popik said organizing this inter-seminary event has helped him and the other Theologians get to know their counterpart Borromeo brothers even better. Popik explains, ?Helping organize the soccer team this year has been a way to get to know the Borromeo guys better and start forming friendships with the new men.?
The event was well attended by about 50 people, including seminarians, seminary faculty and friends and family of the soccer players.
