February 21 marks the start of the special Vatican gathering bringing together Church leaders from around the world aimed at strengthening child protection policies, increasing accountability and ensuring transparency in a global effort to rid the Church of the evil of child sexual abuse. Joining my prayers to those of the Holy Father in Rome, I ask the church in the Diocese of Cleveland to pray for the success of this meeting so that it is, in the words of Pope Francis, “a powerful gesture of pastoral responsibility in the face of an urgent challenge.” May this meeting be filled with a deep sense of humility and contrition leading to meaningful change. And, in a particular way, we remember in prayer all those who in any way have suffered at the hands of clergy in the Church. May the God of all Goodness comfort them with His love and peace.
