Bishop Martin Amos, retired bishop of the Diocese of Davenport, celebrated the funeral Mass on April 8 at Our Lady of Peace Church in Cleveland for retired Deacon William E. Dirk. Father Gary Chmura, Our Lady of Peace pastor, was the homilist.
Bishop Nelson Perez presided at vespers on April 7 at Our Lady of Peace and Father Dan Schlegel was the homilist. Visitation also took place at the church.
Deacon Dirk, 85, died on April 3.
Survivors include his wife, Judith A. (Stine), children and grandchildren.
Bishop Anthony M. Pilla ordained Deacon Dirk to the permanent diaconate for service to the Diocese of Cleveland on June 2, 1984 in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.
The deacon was assigned to serve Holy Cross Parish in Euclid. On Aug. 15, 1994, he was assigned as pastoral minister at Mount Sinai Hospital and on May 3, 1993, he was appointed pastoral minister at St. Luke Hospital. Deacon Dirk was granted retirement status on May 30, 2012.
Interment was private.
