Today I join with Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, in welcoming Pope Francis’ Motu Proprio responding to the evil of sexual abuse in the Church. While much of what the Holy Father’s new directive requires is already in place in the Church in the United States, this Motu Proprio will be a great help to our diocese and others around the country as we continue to build upon the meaningful work that has been done since 2002 to address the evil of sexual abuse. As your bishop, I remain committed to preventing sexual abuse in the Church, providing healing to those who experience abuse, and appropriately dealing with those who commit abuse. I look forward to working with my brother bishops on implementing next steps when we meet in June at the national bishop’s conference.
