Maureen Dee retires from Catholic Charities; Spencer Kline to oversee Cuyahoga County behavioral health programs division

News of the Diocese

May 23, 2019

A transition is underway at Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland. Maureen Dee, longtime executive director of the organization’s treatment, prevention and recovery services, is retiring. Spencer Kline, who was hired as senior director of the division that operates behavioral health programs throughout Cuyahoga County, is transitioning into that new role.

Dee was born and raised in Uruguay, South America. She received a master’s degree in social service administration from Case Western Reserve University and an MBA from Cleveland State University. Dee has worked in the field of chemical dependency since 1978, first as a bilingual chemical dependency counselor and then as a supervisor and program developer. Eventually, she took responsibility over the entire alcohol and drug service system of Catholic Charities Services Corp. in Cuyahoga County.

During her career Dee received numerous awards and accolades, including the Distinguished Alumni Award from Case Western Reserve University. On May 13, the Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board of Cuyahoga County presented her with its Lifetime Achievement Award for her tireless service and dedication to serving individuals living with mental illness and addictions and creating a more comprehensive system of care in Cuyahoga County.

“I want to express my deep appreciation for the opportunity to work with Catholic Charities these many years,” Dee said. “Over the course of my career I was allowed to be creative and helped grow our organization into the change-agent it is today. Most of all, I was blessed to work with and benefit from so many talented and dedicated colleagues.”

Kline has more than two decades of experience in successfully managing and leading the delivery of behavioral health services. Most recently, he was the first CEO of Beacon Health, a consolidation of Neighboring and Pathways, a role he began in January 2001. In 2018, Beacon Health affiliated with nonprofit Crossroads as the first step toward merging organizations and Kline served the combined agencies as chief strategy officer before joining the team at Catholic Charities of Cleveland.

Currently, Kline is a commissioner appointee on the Lake County Senior Services Advisory panel in an effort to plan and advocate for current and future needs of Lake County’s older adult population. His prior service included six years as a Lake County representative on the Board of Trustees for the Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging and on the Lake County Workforce Investment Board. Kline’s professional interests remain in the area of managing and advocating for behavioral health services for all age groups.

“I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to lead the treatment, prevention and recovery services of Catholic Charities. I am grateful for the tremendous work Maureen has accomplished to establish the organization’s presence in the community,” Kline said. “I look forward to building upon that success.”
