Bishop Nelson Perez and a group of priests from the Diocese of Cleveland are traveling to Rome and Assisi for a pilgrimage and retreat. Father Dan Schlegel, secretary and vicar for clergy and religious, is sharing some of their experiences. Below is a recap of the second day.
This morning (May 29) we gathered for Mass at 7 a.m. in the Chapel of Rezidenza Madre Pie in Rome. I (Father Dan Schlegel) presided and spoke about how important it is to “connect the dots” when it comes to God. The more we connect, the more we recognize God at work in our lives and our world.
The group gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the weekly papal audience with Pope Francis. He spoke about the importance of our witness to the faith and how the Holy Spirit inflames hearts and overcomes walls of division. The group of priests from the Diocese of Cleveland was welcomed by the Holy Father’s representative and we were proud to represent our diocese to the universal Church.
The rest of the day was free for individuals to explore the great city of Rome. Some went to the Pantheon, others visited the major basilicas and Father Dan and Bishop Perez had a tour of the Vatican Museum and the gardens. While dodging raindrops, we explored the beautiful grounds of the Vatican and visited the place where Pope Benedict resides.
After a long day of exploration and prayer, several of us visited the home of an Italian resident where we enjoyed a wonderful five-course Italian meal as we dined with visitors from Australia and Amsterdam and experienced the hospitality and welcome of one of Italy’s greatest chefs.
Tomorrow (May 30) we will celebrate Mass at the tomb of St. Peter in the basilica of St. Peter --the very heart of Rome.
