News of the Diocese

June 3, 2019

Amy Butler has been selected to serve as the Associate Superintendent for Secondary Schools for the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, Office of Catholic Education.

Butler, who currently serves as president of Elyria Catholic High School where she had previously been principal from 2009 to 2015, will join the leadership team serving Catholic schools that educate more than 40,000 students across the diocese. Butler replaces Dr. Frank O’Linn, who was named Secretary for Catholic Education and Superintendent of Schools in March of this year.

Butler will lead the system that encompasses 20 secondary schools in the diocese, including 15 of which are independently owned or sponsored by religious orders. Her primary responsibility will be leading the network of five diocesan owned high schools, of which Elyria Catholic is one. The four others include Cleveland Central Catholic High School, Holy Name High School, Lake Catholic High School and Villa Angela – St. Joseph High School.

Butler holds a Master of Education degree from Ashland University and a Bachelor of Science from Kent State University. In a career shift to education, she brought her business background into the classroom as teacher and chair of the business department at Elyria Catholic. Butler then went onto serve the school as Director of Admissions and Marketing, Director of Development, and Assistant/Associate Principal prior to being named principal of her alma mater.

“I am thrilled to have Amy joining our team, bringing her successful leadership experiences as both president and principal to the work of supporting our network of schools,” said Dr. O’Linn. “She has proven her ability to lead for strong culture and academic growth inside a school as well as her skill in strategic planning and garnering of outside support that is essential for our schools to continue to fulfill their missions.”

"I am honored to be joining the Office of Catholic Education team under the direction of Dr. Frank O’Linn, Superintendent. To continue to serve the Catholic education community at this level, and in this capacity is a true blessing. I was recently touched by sentiments of Bishop Perez at Elyria Catholic’s 70thAnniversary that Catholic schools exists because their communities support their mission. I look forward to assisting Catholic school communities to sustain their educational mission” Butler said.
