Auxiliary Bishop emeritus Roger Gries celebrated the funeral Mass for Deacon Howard J. Masony on June 1 at St. Mark Church in Cleveland’s West Park neighborhood. Deacon David Lundeen was the homilist.
The wake began with vespers on May 31 at St. Mark Church with Bishop Martin Amos, bishop emeritus of Davenport, Iowa, as presider. Deacon Louis Maldonado was the homilist.
Deacon Masony, 74, who served at St. Mark’s, died on May 22. He is survived by his wife, Lynn (Hering) Masony, children and grandchildren.
On May 23, 1992 in the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, Bishop Anthony Pilla ordained him to the permanent diaconate for the service to the Diocese of Cleveland.
Deacon Masony was assigned to serve St. Ambrose Parish in Brunswick and on July 15, 1995 he was assigned to serve St. Colette Parish in Brunswick. On July 16, 1996 Deacon Masony was assigned to serve St. Joseph Parish, Strongsville and on July 1, 2002 he was assigned to serve St. Joseph Parish, Avon Lake.
He was assigned on July 1, 2006 to serve St. Mark Parish, Cleveland, where he ministered until his death. Deacon Masony was a faithful servant of the Lord. His kindness and great sense of humor will be greatly missed.
Interment was at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
