On this World Day for Migrants and Refugees, a special day set aside by the Vatican, we take time to reflect on the God-given dignity inherent in all of us as we are part of the human family. This day reminds us of our call as people of faith, as Bishop Joe S. Vásquez, chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Migration, so aptly noted “to welcome our brothers and sisters, promote their well-being, protect them from cruelty and indifference,” and to live in solidarity with one another.
Today also serves as a reminder to us to respond to the many challenges of contemporary migration with generosity, promptness, wisdom and foresight, each according to their own abilities. May we all join together in prayer for those who seek a better life, working together with them to help achieve that goal.
