Cory was trapped in a cycle of substance abuse and was struggling to find a way out. He had a child on the way and his ongoing substance abuse battle landed him in a hospital emergency department.
Thanks to St. John the Baptist Recovery Outreach Center in Akron – a ministry of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland – and assistance from Tom, a peer support specialist at the center, Cory got the help he needed to begin his road to recovery.
“He was the smiling face there when I was at the lowest of my lows,” Cory said.
Tom enjoys the connections he makes as a recovery coach. His personal experience helps make the work more meaningful because he’s been there; Tom battled substance abuse. “Recovery is something that I need in order to live and that I need to share. To be able to do that through Catholic Charities has just been overwhelming for me,” he said.
The St. John the Baptist Recovery Outreach Center opened in April 2019 thanks in large part to the 2018 Follow-Up Parish Appeal earmarked for expanding substance abuse programs. Because of this, an addiction-free future is more attainable for members of the community. “By donating to Catholic Charities, you’ve helped save lives,” one client said, thanking donors.
Cory and Tom are among the many #FacesofHope being featured in the 2020 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal, which is underway. The parish in-pew appeal will take place the weekend of Feb. 8-9 in all parishes throughout the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland. It is not a special collection; rather, the appeal offers a chance for all Catholics to make a significant pledge, payable in installments, to Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland. Acting as one body in Christ, it is possible to change the faces of despair, loneliness, darkness and addiction into #FacesofHope.
Financial gifts to Catholic Charities will help provide essential programs and services to people throughout the eight-county Diocese of Cleveland. #FacesofHope: Though We are Many, We are One in Christ is the theme for this year’s appeal.
After several record-setting years, the 2020 appeal goal is $13.5 million. The appeal is managed by the Catholic Community Foundation. It supports Catholic Charities’ ministries throughout Northeast Ohio, one of the region’s most significant health and human service providers. Annually, Catholic Charities assists more than 400,000 people in need as it addresses some of the most pressing social issues, including homelessness, addiction, families in crisis and care for the elderly.

A new, more convenient option for donations, text-to-donate, can be done with any smartphone. Create a new text to send to 41444 and type CCHOPE in the body of the message. A link will be texted that donors can click on and follow instructions to make a donation to the 2020 annual appeal. Donors can select a pre-determined amount or enter their own donation. A tutorial video to walk prospective donors through the new text-to-give option can be viewed HERE.
