The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland named Richard J. Osborne interim president of Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School, replacing former president Bill Cervenik who stepped down. Osborne is returning to VASJ, where he previously served as chairman of the board from 2009-2011 and president of the school from 2011 to 2016, when he retired.
In making the announcement, Frank O’Linn, secretary for education and superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Cleveland, praised Osborne for his leadership and willingness to serve. “Mr. Osborne has given generously of his time and talent to the mission of Catholic education in the diocese over many years and in many capacities. In every position, Richard has shown an exemplary dedication to Catholic education in general and to students in the course of their academic success and personal growth. He will serve VASJ well in his role of interim president as a search is launched to name a new permanent president for the school.”
Osborne served in many roles in secondary education in both the Cleveland and Youngstown dioceses. Most recently, he was CEO and interim president of Cardinal Mooney High School in the Diocese of Youngstown. Previously, he also served as a consultant for Elyria Catholic High School, interim president of Lake Catholic High School and a consultant for secondary education in the office of the Superintendent of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland.
In addition, Osborne has an extensive career history in the fields of journalism and communications. A 1973 graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a degree in fine arts, Osborne was the publisher of Ohio Magazine and was inducted into the Cleveland Journalism Hall of Fame in 2007.
"I look forward to reuniting with my colleagues at VASJ and helping to build on all the great things Bill Cervenik and his team have accomplished in the four years since I retired,” Osborne said. “VASJ is a terrific school and it has been a pleasure to witness the progress it has made in the Ursuline and Marianist tradition. I'm grateful to be asked to return."
Osborne has a rich history with VASJ, graduating from St. Joseph High School in 1969. His wife, Della, is a 1968 graduate of Villa Angela Academy. The Osbornes, who will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in June, have four children and 10 grandchildren.
VASJ is a Catholic, comprehensive college-preparatory school rooted in the Ursuline and Marianist traditions and committed to the spiritual, academic and personal growth of each student.
