A statement from Father Donald P. Oleksiak, administrator of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, on the passing of Youngstown Bishop George V. Murry, SJ

News of the Diocese

June 6, 2020

The Catholic community in Northeast Ohio mourns the passing of the Most Rev. George V. Murry, SJ bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown who died on Friday, June 5 after a courageous battle with leukemia. Bishop Murry will be remembered as a faithful and devoted servant who brought people closer to Christ through the powerful witness of his life.

Prior to his illness, Bishop Murry was a prominent leader of the Church on a national level serving as the chair of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee Against Racism as well as chair of the USCCB Committee on Catholic education.

Bishop Murry was instrumental in the development of the Church’s pastoral letter to the lay faithful and all people of goodwill addressing the evil of racism. He will be remembered by the people of Northeast Ohio as having a warm smile and a shepherd’s heart. He will be greatly missed.

Together we pray that that God grant Bishop Murry eternal rest and comfort his family in their time of mourning.
