I am pleased at the rulings today by the U.S. Supreme Court that bolstered the cause of religious freedom. In one ruling, the Supreme Court recognized the right of the Little Sisters of the Poor, as an employer, to not cooperate with the immoral activity of participating in mandated health plan contraceptive coverage. In a second decision, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a ruling protecting the right of Catholic schools — free of government interference — to choose teachers who will teach and model the Catholic faith.
I am grateful that the Supreme Court took these important steps to protect our religious liberty and I echo the words of Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami, chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee for Religious Liberty who recently said, “The right to religious freedom has its foundation in the very dignity of the human person. Religious freedom is the human right that guarantees all other rights — peace and creative living together will only be possible if freedom of religion is fully respected.”
May God grant wisdom that our country’s leaders may continue to protect and defend our religious freedom.
