The golf outing that wasn’t still managed to raise money to help support the much-needed ministry of St. Augustine Hunger Center, which is based at St. Augustine Parish in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood.

Richard Slosar, chairman of Sister Corita’s Fifth Annual Golf Outing, said the event, which was canceled by the coronavirus pandemic, so far has generated $25,000 for the hunger center. The golf outing is named in honor of Sister Corita Ambro, CSJ, who directed and ministered at the hunger center for nearly a half-century before retiring in 2018.

“We were gratified that so many still supported our efforts in spite of us not golfing,” Slosar said. This year’s golf outing major sponsors are Catholic Charities Corp., Boyd Watterson and Todd Associates, Slosar added.

There still time to support St. Augustine Hunger through the golf outing. Slosar said those interested can register a foursome, sponsor a hole or make a donation at sistercoritagolf.org.

“I am so humbled by the generosity of our communities to help support the hunger center especially in the summer months when donations of food and money are typically down,” said Sister Corita. “Thank you to all that donated and supported this fundraiser.”

The hunger center provides more than 250,000 meals a year throughout seven counties in northeast Ohio. All the proceeds from the golf outing go directly to St. Augustine’s Hunger Center. Those interested in supporting the St. Augustine Hunger Center also can make donations at sistercorita.fundraiserdirect.com.

The hunger center is under the umbrella of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland , one of the largest comprehensive health and human services organizations in the region. It delivers more than 150 services at 60 locations to more than 400,000 people of every race and religion each year in the eight counties of the diocese: Ashland, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Summit and Wayne.

St. Augustine Hunger Center was founded more than 45 years ago and it serves more than 250,000 meals annually. During the holidays, its outreach expands to 25 other food centers in Cuyahoga, Lorain, Summit, Lake, Geauga and Medina.

The hunger center is the most visible portion of the ministry. Other facets of the outreach programs at St. Augustine Parish include:

  • Distributing furniture and appliances to needy families as available
  • Hosting dinners for homeless and needy families at the time of a funeral
  • Providing emergency funding for rent and utilities
  • Providing advocacy and referrals to social services for job training, substance abuse problems and housing
  • Support services include pastoral care, counseling, religious education, PSR and interpreting
  • Engaging in many other services and community projects

St. Augustine Parish has been led by Father Joseph McNulty for 46 years.

In addition to her work with the hunger center, Sister Corita was coordinator of services for the diocesan Disability Ministry, including the Deaf Ministry.
