There’s still time to be counted in the 2020 Census

Has your household completed the 2020 Census either online or by mail? If not, a census worker may be visiting your home during the next month.

Sister Rita Mary Harwood, SND who heads the Secretariat for Parish Life and Development in the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, is encouraging people throughout the diocese to complete the census to ensure that this year’s counts are as accurate as possible.

Federal law requires everyone living in the United States and its five territories to be counted in the census, which is conducted every 10 years. Students, those in correctional facilities and those without a permanent address also are to be counted.

Census officials said it is important for everyone to be counted because those statistics are used to determine funding that communities receive for key public services and to draw boundaries for congressional, state legislative districts and school districts.

By law, census data must be protected and can be used only to develop statistics.

Complicating this year’s census is the ongoing health crisis that has made door-to-door data collection unsafe. As of last week, about 63% of households in the country have responded to the census so far.

Within the eight-county Diocese of Cleveland, Medina County has the highest completion rate with about 77% of households counted. Next are Lake and Geauga counties, with about 75% of households counted Wayne County’s count rate is about 74% and Ashland County is next with about 73%, followed by Summit County with about 72%. About 65% of Cuyahoga County households have been counted and about 62% of Lorain County households were counted.

Counts in some of the major urban areas are lagging far behind the tallies for the 2010 census. Cleveland, Lorain and Akron are among the cities with lower returns so far.
