Father Valley, 85, died on Sept. 26. He was a senior priest-retired.
An Akron native, he was born on Nov. 13, 1934 to the late John and Lora (Emery) Valley. Father Valley was educated at St. Martha School and St. Mary High School, both in Akron. He attended seminary at St. Charles, Catonsville, Maryland; Borromeo, Wickliffe; and Saint Mary, Cleveland. Bishop John Krol ordained him to the priesthood for service to the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland on May 28, 1960, in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.
Father Valley’s first assignment was a parochial vicar of St. Sebastian Parish, Akron. On June 11, 1964, he was assigned to serve as a full-time faculty member at Borromeo Seminary College, in addition to serving as associate chaplain for SERRA West, effective Oct. 2, 1964, and on the Diocesan Budget Committee, effective Jan. 24, 1977.
Father Valley was released from diocesan assignment on July 1, 1990, in order to serve as a consulting psychologist to Tabor House.
He retired on Nov. 13, 2004.
Those who knew him said Father Valley touched the lives of many. They said his love for the Church and the priesthood was evident by the manner in which he lived his life. They recalled his smile, infectious laugh and zealous greetings, often with strong pats on the back.
Interment will be at All Saints Cemetery in Northfield.
